Pregnancy, birth and parenthood are unique rites of passage
As in life, risk is inherent in childbirth, but it can be dramatically reduced through a strengths-based lens of salutogenesis. This word comes from the latin 'saluto' for health, and asks us to look at what supports an individual's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.
While everyone has the capacity for health, birth is unpredictable. This is why the unknown of birth - which involves factors beyond our control - has to be acknowledged and respected.
The challenge in birth at the moment is that many people are disadvantaged by 'too much too soon' (i.e. unnecessary intervention) or 'too little too late' (i.e. avoidable poor outcomes).
Holistic, personalised care, which brings more compassion and less judgement, is essential for the improvement of our maternity services.
Birthing people's lived experience must be the starting point for midwifery and the place to which we always return to make progress. That is why I love to learn from families' unique journeys into parenthood.
